So Many Embroidery Designs, So Many Different Formats!
Embroidery Designs can be purchased a number of different ways (as I’m sure you have found out!), so here is a brief break-down for you.
Multi-Format CD-ROM:
Many embroiderers have the ability to transfer designs from their computer (or CD-ROMs via their computer in this case). Often times OESD will offer additional designs in a wider range of sizes on their CD-ROMs because higher-end machines tend to have a larger embroidery field. If your’s doesn’t, fear not, OESD includes a free sizing program on the CD to allow you to down-size the embroidery designs. Amazing Designs now also offers resizing and editing software for free with the purchase of their Multi-Format CD-ROMs, look for this in their newest releases.
Multi-Format CD-ROMs are popular because they include a wide range of design formats that covers an even wider range of embroidery machines. Chances are your machine is included in these formats as well. A list of included embroidery design formats is given in each product description.
Remember, to use a Multi-Format CD-ROM, you must be able to transfer designs FROM your computer TO your Embroidery Machine. This can be done via a direct-connect USB link, through floppy disks, USB sticks, or via a reader/writer box that writes embroidery designs to a blank embroidery card specific for your machine.
Brother Embroidery Cards:
Embroidery Cards have been a long-time favorite for embroiderers because of their ease of use. Push it in your embroidery machine’s memory card slot and Voila! The embroidery designs magically appear on your embroidery machine! These embroidery cards are very specific to your make and model of embroidery machine, so more care must be given when choosing one. Sometimes they will even include embroidery designs that are too large for your embroidery machine to embroider, so you must make sure that the designs will fit within the embroidery field of your machine.
These Brother embroidery cards are actually compatible with a number of different brands of embroidery machines. Here is a list of embroidery machines that are compatible: Brother (of course), Baby Lock, Simplicity, White, & Bernina Deco (be careful here, though. The Bernina Decos were manufactured for a long time by Brother and the compatible models include the Deco 500, 600, and 650. The newer Deco models are actually manufactured by Janome and these cards are NOT compatible with the newer Bernina Deco models. Confused? It’s ok, it gets confusing for us, too. Just call us with your model and we can help.)
One thing to remember about Brother embroidery cards: Disney embroidery designs ARE available on Brother embroidery cards, however, these designs will ONLY work with Brother Disney embroidery machines.
Artista Embroidery Cards:
Artista Embroidery Cards are similar to the Brother embroidery cards but work in the Bernina Artista embroidery machines. However, these embroidery cards also work in the newer Deco models (such as the 330 and 340). These are the only types of machines that Artista embroidery cards are compatible with. Again, these embroidery cards are inserted directly into the embroidery machine and require no additional software or computer to embroider the designs.
USB Sticks:
This is the newest kid on the embroidery block. Instead of purchasing the embroidery designs on a CD-ROM or embroidery card, the embroidery designs are preloaded onto a USB Stick (or thumb drive) that can then be inserted into your computer. This is similar in fashion to the Multi-Format CD-ROM, but many embroiderer’s like this new way because there is less chance of breaking your USB Stick than with a CD-ROM (remember to always back up your embroidery designs!!!) and the USB stick is much more portable. However, like the CD-ROM, you must be able to transfer embroidery designs FROM your computer TO your embroidery machine.
Wooh! That’s a lot of information! Hopefully it will help out a little if you were confused as to how you should purchase designs for your embroidery machine. There are still even more ways to get embroidery designs (instant download, via email, etc.) But we’ll save that for another day
